Romiette and Julio by Sharon M. Draper is a very good book. It is about these two 16 year old eleventh graders, from two totally different places. One being Romiette whom is from Cincinnati and Julio whom is from Corpus Christi. Julio have moved to Cincinnati because his family fell on hard times because his father lost his job. Julio hated being in Cincinnati because it was dull, gray, and boring. So seeing that he wasn’t going anywhere anytime soon, Julio had to find someway to enjoy himself. Therefore, he used Teen Talk which is an online chat room. Being here he met a girl named afroqueen.
Afroqueen turned out to be Romiette. Being that this is the internet, Romiette was a little skeptical. However, once discovering that Julio went to her school she was very excited. Romiette and Julio began to eat lunch together every day and got to know each other. After only a short period of knowing Julio, Julio was the only thing on Romiette’s mind. She liked how clever, smart, and kind he was. Although, she disn’t know it yet, Julio felt the same way about her. However, these young lovers have come up on a problem.
Julio is Mexican and new at an all black school. So because of this the big gang called, The Family don’t like him. Nor do they like the fact of him talking to a black girl. So they felt the need to teach him a lesson. Therefore, one day while Romiette and Julio were walking, five people get out of a Cadillac. They tied up both Romietee and Julio and kidnap them. However, the kidnapping didn’t go as they wanted it to. So through all of this Romiette and Julio...well you have to read it to find out more and to find out if Romiette’s love for Julio diminishes or grows stronger through all the trials and tribulations. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
